Something I have wanted to do personally for quite a while and have never seemed to had the time to get down there, is a visit to the wonderful Pinnacles at Cape Woolamai on Phillip Island…at Dawn. I actually wanted to go in the winter months to avoid getting up so early… I arrived in the Surf Beach car-park in the pitch dark and worked my way onto the beach by torchlight….the tide was right out and the walk to the first set of steps is very easy. Along the top track towards the Pinnacles in darkness is an awesome walk, as hundreds of shearwaters run ahead like mad trying to stay ahead of you. you will almost trip over them as they bunch up and i cannot work out why they don’t just simply run to the side! Dawn broke as I was setting up and then I spend the next hour in total bliss, with the only company a seal pup drying himself on a nearby rock. As I only took wide angle lenses with me I didn’t shoot a close-up of the seemingly very tame pup. I will now want to go back a few times to this beautiful and serene spot and hopefully get some different skies.

Southern Tasmania and Hobart September 2014
A few days off from my busy schedule, I decided to pop down to Hobart with my wife and meet up with a couple of friends. I wanted to go somewhere special for my birthday and what better place than seafood in one of Hobart’s fine waterfront restaurants. It wasn’t really a photographic journey as such, but you just can’t help yourself, so even though I only carried the little Olympus OMD-EM1 with me and a couple of lenses, I grabbed the odd shot when it presented itself. Next time though, I have made a promise to myself that it’s time to do some serious photography down in these southern parts, something I have not done for a while! Maybe my next visit!

The City of Melbourne at Dusk August 2014
I had the opportunity to shoot the city of Melbourne from the 67th Level of a new skyscraper tower that is still in the process of construction last evening. A good friend of mine is a commercial building inspector and had arranged for the two of us to travel up to this level and capture the sunset and dusk. It was quite dazzling and a bit daunting as it is open air and there is hardly a barrier between you and the drop far below. I actually got enough courage to walk out into the large skip which protrudes right out from this level and capture the city lights and the glow of the dusk, out towards St.Kilda and bayside, just basically hanging out the edge of the building inside the bin!
A Highly Recommended short photography tour in Laos
Photographic Workshop Norfolk Island August 1st – 9th 2014
I have just returned from another beautiful and extremely satisfying workshop I conducted on Norfolk Island. I was very lucky to have with me a lovely and humorous group who within days were the best of friends and enjoyed all the sessions together. The weather was delightful and varied, as we photographed the mist and clouds, the drama of morning light and the ever changing colours of the landscape and seascape. I never cease to be amazed at the variety of light that the month of August seems to provide this speck of rock in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. I am sure everyone has come away with very fond memories and a countless number of images ready to be processed in the weeks ahead. A big thank-you to all who attended, you really were a wonderful bunch! Thank you too, Karen and Becki and Norfolk Island Travel Centre for your care and attention to all details. You girls are simply marvellous. Thanks Jeanette at the Polynesian Apartments for all your hard work and lovely breakfasts. I also spend a few extra days here, after my group flew home, to catch up with friends and to get an opportunity to at last visit nearby Phillip Island, an area under Australian Parks management. I managed to get out there the day before I was due to fly home. On arrival, David our skipper skilfully steered the boat at high tide into the jump off point and the three of us hopped off quickly onto the wet rocks. From there it is a rope assisted climb up through a crevice to a place where you can begin your walk. Blue Skies and the absolute sheer magnificence of this place is hard to describe. Often dubbed the “Uluru of the South Pacific” as under the right light, it has a kaleidoscope of the richest red, purple and yellow hues. It’s a bit of a slog to explore the Island and thanks to the seemingly endless energy of Sorrel and her son Aden, we managed to cover all the best spots in a few hours. My camera never stopped working and the highlight, apart from the beautiful rich colours, were the nesting Masked Boobies. Wide angle is all you need as the birds are quite unafraid as you quietly approach them.
I will be running another workshop to Norfolk Island in 2015 The dates are the 14th-22nd August. I am taking bookings already. To book just contact me for your PDF which will be available soon.
During our visit to the Island I always try for night-time images, startrails and moonlight. On this occasion we had a Super Moon event and so I took the group down to the Historic Cemetary for some special images. We had to wait until about 11pm for the moon to rise behind us above the steep hills, but when it did, it was a delight.
The First light of the morning was never the same. Always beautiful and sometimes spectacular, it had us out shooting at 6.30am every day. The sheer magic of this tiny Island inspires and delights!
Always one for getting a particularly special and different image, I seem to be the source of amusement for my workshop participants… here is a small selection of images that were taken of me in my pursuit of “The Shot”
Interview for Digital Photographer Magazine UK Special Issue 150
I was recently asked to be interviewed for the upcoming special edition 150th issue of England’s Digital Photographer Magazine. I had no control over the photo content that the designer decided to go with, but overall I was extremely happy with the end result. Apparently, as it’s going to be released in their Summer, the editor thought they should use warm photographs of mine rather than my recent cold weather ones that I would have liked in this feature. This 150th issue should be available in Australia in a month or so… it has a special plastic wrap as part of the special edition look.
Winter days of Contentment – King Island Sojourn… July 15th to 18th 2014
Spent three days last week on King Island and shared some of my favourite locations with my good friend and often-times workshop partner Ewen Bell, exploring new ideas and places that fit in nicely with photographic lessons. Winter was in its absolute glory! The roaring forties battered the West Coast during our stay and the wind whirled and hammered during the night. The rain fell in bucketfuls and eased off just when we needed it to…. Green as green and lush landscapes greeted us each day. The cows were fat and wanted to greet us at every stop. That 40 south degree winter light was often just wonderful for landscape images and the coastlines were particularly spectacular. Ewen is keen to working the Island into his visually stunning Food Photography Workshops and we had discussions with Island Operators while there. Winter down here on the Bass Strait Islands is totally amazing and the bursts of low level sunshine and beautiful light just made it all the more perfect!
One Day Food Photography Taster Workshop July 21st 2014
Dartmoor National Park in Devon England June 19th 2014
My son-in-Law Matt is senior staff writer for “Digital Photography” magazine at Imagine Publishing and needed some fresh material for a huge article in an upcoming issue…. what better way to get some new images than to plan a big day out! So we did…. we left home early and drove over to the next county, with a breakfast stop on the way. I had previously been to Brentour ( A 12th century church 350 metres up on top of a hill) but Matt hadn’t and always wanted to have an opportunity to photograph it. We needed images from the middle part of the day and also towards dusk and we both easily filled in the rest of the time working our way over some of the narrow winding roads of Dartmoor. We spent a couple of hours down in a valley along the Dart River and also spent some time up on the Tors, wild ponies and all…. Here is a small selection of images taken on this day…. The Panorama is actually a 360 degree view at Brentour.
