Article and Photographs in the May-June 2013 Issue of Camera Magazine

Out this week is the latest Issue of the Australian Camera Magazine which features an article I wrote for them about the beautiful Tarkine region on Tasmania’s West Coast. The story begins on page 26. The magazine features one of my Photographs in the background of the front cover which is driftwood at the mouth of the Arthur River with an approaching storm. The four page feature is part of the Photogenic places that has been running in the magazine for a number of years and to date this series has featured six articles by me. Later in the year there will also be a feature by me in this series on the area around Benalla in Central Victoria.

Working with the Olympus OM-D-5

A lot of photographer’s have asked me recently many questions with regard to the Olympus OM-D-5. How good is it and how do the photo’s you take compare with your current camera. Well simply put: nothing will replace my full-frame Nikon Camera and Lenses. However having said that there are going to be numerous times I don’t wish to carry heavy gear and having a lightweight alternative makes a lot of sense. I am doing some long hikes now and some of these will run into multi-day ones, and there is no way I am going to carry heavier gear. The Olympus OM-D-5  is a marvel of engineering and precision. I am completely astounded at the quality of the images it can produce. Bear in mind that its the way you use this camera that will give you the desired results and the worst thing you can do is treat it like a compact camera. This machine is far far ahead of that! In the following examples I show you what it can do. The first image below is a copy from the Latest Digital Photography magazine (Issue 31) just out on the Newsagents stands this week. In the Editor’s Welcome an image of mine has been used from Nepal. This image is a 3 shot vertical using the 9-18mm zoom. I used 25% overlap and shot 2 images of each 1 with 2 stop under-exposure and one with 1/3 stop under. the two images were merged in photoshop individually and then the final images was created. Readers of my blog will be aware that I have already inserted the copy of the 4 page article on the camera, but if you want to buy and keep the magazine and refer to the article its on pages 94 to 97.

DIGITAL-PHOTOGRAPHY-ISSUE31In the next photo below I have an example of extreme contrast in a rainforest setting. Again I am amazed at what the Olympus can do! On Lord Howe Island there are large pockets of rainforest and within this are stands of Pandanus. I took this photo after quite a long walk and the sun was nearly full overhead with extreme contrast. I hand held the camera and took a set of 5 images @F9 to eventually form a panorama once I got all the images into the computer. Each set of images were exposed 3 times. One at 2 and 1/3 under exposed One at 1/3 under exposed and One at 1/3 over exposed. Each set 0f 3 images were merged in Photo-matix Pro and the default tone-mapping was left on. Using the 5 finished images I then stitched/merged in Photoshop using the reposition setting. the photo was tweaked in Nik software using structure/saturation/sharpening.  The finished photograph is 18 inches by 30 inches and is quite superb in quality. The details in the photo are excellent and its sharp front to back.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

In the image below is another very tricky lighting situation. This is a little stream near the Rocky run on the far side of Lord Howe Island. This spot is in the rainforest too and the light was again very contrasty. I shot hand-held @F8 exposing a set of 4 images each one with 2 exposures One at 2 stops under and One at a 1/3 underexposed. The two images from each sequence were merged in layers in CS6 and once finished were stitched in Photoshop using the reposition setting. Not strictly a panorama, but I wanted to capture the entire scene so therefore the need to take all the images. A few more tweaks in Nik software to get the lighting,  Structure and sharpening just right I ended up with an image 15 inches x 25 inches of incredible high quality and also incredibly sharp, showing off the vast detail in this rainforest setting. I deliberately set out to find a difficult and challenging setting to work the Olympus OM-D-5 and put it through its paces. It has come up trumps and I would have no hesitation recommending it to anyone. If you click on any of these images, I have downloaded them in a slightly higher resolution than I normally would, so anyone can see the quality on their computer screen.

Rocky-Run-Rainforest

Finally, the image below is a five photo merge and it was taken after a quick dash up Mount Eliza and shot while catching my breath, hand held and with at least 30% lap on each image. Finished in Photo-shop and tweaked up. Late afternoon light helped of course…But here the Olympus did the job extremely well, and no heavy load on this walk to slow me down.I sincerely hope this little exercise has helped answer the many questions I have been asked recently. This is not a paid ad for Olympus but I have used Olympus camera’s in the past, especially in the film days. There are a lot of small camera’s out there that just do not come up to the mark…. But the OM-D-5 is not one of them. Its my backup camera and will be in my bag on all my travels.

LORD HOWE ISLAND PHOTOGRAPHIC TOUR -2nd to the 11th May 2013

Sixteen mad keen participants recently spent ten days with me on this Idyllic World Heritage Island. We had the most magnificent weather, changeable and breezy. To see Rain squalls and cloud, storms and rainbows, followed by sun and dazzling displays of crepuscular light as it swept over the horizon almost everyday was a spectacle and a Light chasing Photographer’s dream! My sincere thanks to John Bell and David Burren for their wonderful efforts in leading the bird photography as I concentrated on the Landscape and coastal Photography. All participants were spoilt for choice. This is an incredibly beautiful part of Australia and for those serious about their outdoor photography, it doesn’t get much better than this! Featured here are just a sampling of the images that I took during the workshop. I will undoubtably be spending much more time on the remaining multitude of images I have as yet not finished! The images displayed here are about half and half with both the Olympus OM-D-5 and the Nikon D700…guess which were taken with what camera? If you can’t, this only goes to show how good the quality is of the Olympus micro four thirds!

Dawn Shoot at Cape Schanck Western Port Bay Victoria April 25th 2013

A cold wind was blowing as about 25 members of the Southern Suburbs Photographic Society and Nepean Camera Clubs attended a dawn shoot with me. Everyone braved the chilly air and descended the steps to photograph the early light at Cape Schanck on the tip of Western Port Bay. We were greeted by some lovely colours in the sky as the sun appeared through the broken clouds and everyone had a great time capturing this first light of the day. Hot Latte’s and refreshments were gladly consumed when we met afterwards at the Flinders Bakery and Cafe.

Flinders Island Photographic Workshop March 29th – 1st April 2013

Easter this year was spent with another wonderful bunch of keen photographers on the wild and rugged Flinders Island. Weather was a mixed bag but the light was great nearly all the through the days we spent down there. We spent time up on Walkers Lookout and nearly got blown away for our troubles… but a momentary burst of sunlight cast an amazing glow on the nearby ranges. Trousers Point had squalls of light rain that nearly blew us off the rocks but we all persevered and got some great images. Coastlines in glorious colours were the favourite but old abandoned buildings came a close second…..Everyone had a wonderful time and we were once again spoilt by our wonderful hosts Ken and Carolyn at Vista’s Lodge. Scrumptious food, including healthy breakfasts, picnic hampers morning teas and superb dinners, which were all provided in abundance and they went down a treat, as we were all ravenousness after so much photography.

OUTBACK ADVENTURE TOUR & PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP BY AIR JUNE 2013

My good friend Ewen Bell is once again conducting this outstanding workshop …… and as you know Ewen and I have conducted a workshop together recently… I only wish I could join him on this tour but I will be in the UK at the same time photographing Scotland. This is a seriously wonderful adventure and Ewen is a great teacher! This workshop comes highly recommended!!

Come and see the real Australia in the most exclusive journey you’ll ever experience. An epic adventure through The Outback that traverses the southern states on the way to the Red Centre, Uluru, Kakadu, Tiwi Island and The Kimberley. Meet indigenous people of the Northern Territory and cattle farmers in the remote regions of Western Australia. We have our own private aircraft with just enough room for eight lucky photographers, tour leaders and a pilot, stunning aerial views between stops and two weeks of sunsets, wilderness and wildlife. This is easily my best photography tour ever, get in early for the 2013 departure.

2013 June 2-15
2014 June 1-14
Maximum group size is 8 people, priced at AU$16,990

Australia-2013-1

Itinerary
Day 1: Coober Pedy
Our adventure begins in Melbourne, departing by light aircraft for the moonscapes of Coober Pedy. This town is the heart of Opal mining in Australia, and we spend the night in a typical lodging deep underground.
Days 2-3: Kings Canyon
Early morning we take a tour to explore the Breakaways, one of the locations for the filming of Mad Max. We fly onwards to Kings Creek Station to spend two nights in the Red Centre. This is a working cattle station complete with camels, stockmen and landscape scenes at the gorge.
Days 4-5: Mary River Wetlands
A big travel day that sees us flying over the varied terrain of Kakadu National park. That afternoon we arrive at our exclusive lodgings at Point Stuart, a wildlife bonanza along the Mary River Wetlands, to the west of Kakadu. We have two days of wetlands tours, sunset cruises and opportunities to photograph saltwater crocodiles, Jabiru, Brolga and more. Barramundi fishing on the Mary River can also be accommodated in the schedule.
Day 6: Tiwi Islands
We fly north to Bathurst Island to meet some of the locals and get face to face with indigenous culture in Australia. The Tiwi Islanders are famous for their unique crafts, artwork and friendly faces.
Day 7-8: Faraway Bay
The flight path heading west takes us over the Kimberley coastline, arriving in the remote jewel of Faraway Bay. During our stay we’ll make a day trip to the King George Falls, explore Australia’s oldest known collections of rock art and get familiar with traditional bush tucker.
Day 9-10: Home Valley Station
We fly further into the wilderness to reach Home Valley, one of the major locations for the filming of “Australia”. For two days we’ll be treated to photographic inspiration with cattle, cowboys, horses and boabs – plus dramatic views of the Cockburn Range.
Day 11: Bungle Bungles
We fly inland for aerial views of Lake Argyle, arriving at the Bungle Bungles in time to shoot the domes at sunset – when colours are at their best.
Day 12: Uluru
We head south in our aircraft to arrive at Uluru, formerly called Ayers Rock. We’ll have the afternoon light on the first day, and then morning light on the next. There is no more iconic symbol of Australia’s Outback than this.
Day 13-14: Parachilna
We catch the sunrise upon Uluru, drive a little further out to shoot the Olgas and then head back to the plane for the last stopover. Parachilna is a dusty town where The Outback meets the Flinders Ranges. We have a final night together to enjoy the hospitality at the Prairie Hotel, and enjoy the sunset, saddles and shiraz. The final day of the trip sets a course over Wilpena Pound for stunning aerial views, before heading all the way back to Melbourne.

Olympus OM-DE-M5 Review

In the Next Issue of Digital Photography magazine Australia (Volume 31) Ewen Bell and I have done a review of the inspiring little camera. In a word its pure magic! I am totally impressed with the quality and ease of using it and what’s more its light and so easy to carry that you hardly know you have it with you. I have the weatherproof version and 5 lenses and its just a marvel to shoot with. As a Photography workshop Instructor I make it my business to avoid photographic tragedy  and so, carry a second kit, just in case one of my workshop participants camera stops working. Believe me it happens! Now I could carry a second full frame or APS-C camera to complement what I use, but I no longer want to be a pack-horse. As I get older (and hopefully wiser) camera weight is a huge consideration! I can see the day when full frame and heavy gear will just not be with me…. camera gear is improving out of sight year by year and amazing images can be taken with smaller camera’s and lenses.

Photographic Workshop to King Island 15th-18th March 2013

KI-Workshop-March2013-02

I have recently returned from a four day workshop on King Island with 21 participants. Two from country Benalla and nineteen from the Rosanna Camera Club. What a great weekend we had together and never a dull moment. It was lovely to see such a large group all working together and appreciating the great outdoors that only a place like king Island can provide with such amazing and changeable weather. I am sure everyone benefited greatly from the workshop judging by the comments made and came away feeling positive and with memory cards full of great images!
